Can New Industry Partnerships Reshape the US Healthcare System?

Health care reform and new payment models have spurred new partnerships that aim to break down traditional market silos, create new efficiencies and spur innovation in care delivery. While some new partnerships are defensive, many aspire to disrupt the status quo. Over the past five years, substantial private capital has been devoted to acquiring or establishing partnerships with physician practices. Some of these arrangements combine physicians with networks of ambulatory facilities with the goal of substantially reducing hospital use. Insurers have also made new investments in the provider sector ranging from purchasing physician practices and home health providers to joint ventures with large health systems. Providers have long been interested in bypassing health plans and contracting directly with large employers. Employer interest in these arrangements has grown in light of dissatisfaction with third-party administrators and the success of several high-profile center-of-excellence programs. Finally, several large mergers have brought major players from different sectors together, most prominently CVS/Aetna and Cigna-Express Scripts. This Forum will analyze the future outlook for a range of different partnerships and discuss whether they are likely to ultimately benefit patients and purchasers.
