When Methodology Meets Policy: Methodology Standards to Support Improved Evidence for Decision Making
Health plans and purchasers increasingly demand evidence beyond what is necessary for FDA approval to justify reimbursement and coverage decisions. This meeting examined the strengths and limitations of different approaches to evaluating medical technologies and services including: observational studies, systematic review, and prospective comparative trials. Participants then debated which types of study methodologies were suitable for answering different types of questions. Participants also discussed what policymakers should know about different study methodologies in order to inform future funding of clinical and health services research.
